Nació el 6 de enero de 1912 en Salt Lake City, Utah.
Fue la menor de una familia de cuatro hermanos, sus padres dejan la ciudad de los mormones que viera nacer a la futura intérprete para instalarse en California.
Curiosamente ya en Hoolywood, los productores contratarán con anterioridad a una hermana mayor de Loretta que responde al nombre de Polly Ann y llega a alcanzar cierto prestigio como estrella infantil.
Será en su ausencia cuando el mismísimo Melvin Le Roy ofrezca su primer contrato a la pequeña Young, que apenas cuenta seis años de edad. Hor Wild Oat lleva por título la cinta donde debuta la actriz encarnando un personaje episódico.
En 1921 hace una brevísima aparición en The Sheik, protagonizada por Rodolfo Valentino, o Ríe payaso ríe, uno de los grandes éxitos de Lon Chaney.
Con igual talento para la comedia como para el drama, ganó un Oscar por Un destino de mujer (The Farmer’s Daughter, H.C. Potter, 1947).
Entre sus películas destacan: Huérfanos de Budapest (Rowland V. Lee 1933); Fueros humanos (F. Borzage, id. su mejor papel); Amor y periodismo (T. Garnett, 1937); Suez (A. Dwan, 1938); El doctor se casa [ The Doctor Takes a Wife], A. Hall, 1940); The Stranger (Orson Welles, 1946); El caballero del Oeste (S. Heisler, 1945); Cause for Alarm (T. Garnett, 1951) y Entre dos amores (Because of You, J. Pevney, 1952).
Por su trabajo en la pequeña pantalla recibió dos Emy de 1956 y 1958 que distinguieron su show.
Loretta Young falleció Santa Mónica (California) el 12 de agosto de 2000 a consecuencia de un cáncer de ovarios.
