David Niven
James David Graham Niven
Actor británico
Nació el 1 de marzo de 1909 en Londres.
Hijo de un capitán de la British Army que murió en Gallipoli en 1915.
Tras abandonar el Royal Military College donde se preparaba para su carrera militar en 1931, probó suerte en Hollywood. La MGM le contrata por quince años.
Pronto le comenzaron a llamar numerosos realizadores, entre ellos Howard Hawks (Ciudad sin ley, 1935), William Wyler (Desengaño, id.; Cumbres borrascosas, 1939, Michael Curtiz (La carga de la brigada ligera, 1936), Ernst Lubitsch (La octava mujer de Barba Azul 1938), John Ford (Four Men and a Prayer id.), Henry Hathaway (La jungla en armas 1939).
Apareció en El gran Mitchell (Leslie Howard, 1942) y Hacia adelante (C. Reed, 1944). Más adelante actuó en La primera dama (F.Borzage, id.), Un matrimonio perfecto (The Perfect Marriage L. Allen, 1947), El otro amor (The Other Love, A. De Toth, id.), La mujer del obispo (The Bishop’s Wife, H. Koster, id.), El último Estuardo (Bonnie Pnnce Charlie, A. Kimmins , 1948), Hechizo (I. Reis, id.), A Kiss in the Dark (D. Daves, 1949).
Sobresale en los personajes de comedia elegantes y encantadores: Horas de ensueño (Happy Go Lovely, Bruce Humberstone, 1951), Tres soldados (T.Garnett, id.) The Moon Is Blue (Otto Preminger, 1953),The Birds and the Bees (N. Taurog, 1956), La vuelta al mundo en 80 días (M. Anderson, id.).
Una de sus apariciones más destacadas es en Buenos días, tristeza (O. Preminger, 1958) basada en la novela de Françoise Sagan. Le concedieron el Oscar al mejor actor por Mesas separadas (D. Mann, id.), según la obra de Terence Rattigan. Sigue interpretando personajes de comedia en La pantera rosa (Blake Edwards, 1964), Lady L (Peter Ustinov 1965), Casino Royale (Val Guest, K. Hugues J. Huston, R. Parrish, 1967) y El salto del tigre (J. Skolimovski , 1972).
Además ha realizado género fantástico (Vampira, C. Donner 1974, como Drácula). Está mucho más cómodo en las comedias policíacas, como Un cadáver a los postres (Murder by Death, Robert Moore, 1976), Muerte en el Nilo ( J. Guillermin , 1978) o en la película bélica de humor (Evasión en Atenea, Georges Pan Cosmatos, 1979).
David Niven falleció en Château-d’Œx, Suiza, el 29 de julio de 1983.
